  •  very intriguing idea (7+ / 0-)

imHo, however, focusing on a specific type of gun, even with metrics like yours, is not going to be effective.

mass shootings like sandy hook account for, like, 2% of gun violence, and experts don't seem to think their incidence is on the rise.

much, much more gun violence is attributable to handguns.

that would include suicides, which account for the majority of u.s. gun deaths.

so eliminating handguns would eliminate a lot more gun violence than banning the weapons preferred for mass shootings.  incidentally, the guns used by the VA Tech shooter wouldn't be touched by an AWB; don't know how they'd score on your scale, though.

but because of the 2nd, we will just about never ban handguns and basic rifles, so it becomes imperative to address (gun) violence by other means -- anti-poverty measures, education funding and expanding mental health services. abandoning the war on drugs wouldn't hurt, either.

    •  I agree with much of what you say (9+ / 0-)

and I recognize that 'Assault Weapons' make up a very small part of the actual murders.  My point is that given that they are pretty much useless for anything other than shooting up lots of people (that is, hunting rifle is pretty much always the better option for hunting) why not just get rid of the damn things...its the low hanging fruit...its for lack of a better word, easy.  Similarly, a similar formula could be used for hadguns.

Would this end all gun violence? Of course not.  But it would be a simple step, part of many steps (of which you detail several important ones) along the way.
