    consider how popular "muscle cars" and their like were until the cost of fuel became prohibitive. I suspect all those horses under the hood often served a lot of the same kinds of needs.

    The economic principle of substitute goods seems to have been at play there. I'm sure another satisfaction for the psychological, as distinguished from the nominal, needs met by all that harnessed power will emerge.

    Or maybe folks might actually attain some real power in their own lives?

      But now they are rather more fuel efficient than they used to be.

      Some even have selectable power-levels/fuel economy.

      Technology took over where merely adding fuel and air trailed off.
