    I used to be petrified of flying and have, on several occasions, taken the train across the U.S.

    It is about nearly $2,000 now to do that if you get a room. Since it's almost a four-day trip, you really do need a room. One night is about all I can handle in coach on a train. And the cost of coach is still about the same as a plane. Plus, count on very little sleep with the stops, boards, and kids.

    It's actually cheaper to fly from Portland, Oregon to SF than to take the train.

    We could fix that. I happen to love trains and, were it remotely affordable, would take them all the time around the U.S.
