  •  okay - several key parts to that (4+ / 0-)

    1.  I am the only male teacher in the 7th grade, and the only white teacher in the school

    2.  in email exchanges with my team members it kind of devolved on me to take the lead on this issue, even though the most forceful teacher of the 7th graders is our music teacher -  they are used to seeing the female teachers as comforters.   I fully acknowledge that all the teachers at Sandy Hook who were killed were females, a point I made to our students, many of whom still have somewhat sexist attitudes about strength and security, although most of our security guards are female

Could others of our teachers have done this?  Sure, but for whatever reason I was more comfortable speaking about it, so I did.  Having a male assert that the females would stand up just at the females at sandy hook did cuts through some of the attitudes especially of a few of our more rambunctious male students.

    •  Thank you, tk . . . I appreciate your description (3+ / 0-)

of the team's email exchanges and the students' view of the female teachers as comforters.  I think you reinforced an important idea that day -- that female teachers can comfort AND protect.

Yes, we need to talk about this. Please sign the dKos Petition to start a national conversation about gun control.
