The Silver Bridge disaster didn't send people off to repair the nation's infrastructure, of course, any more than the I-35W bridge collapse in 2007 did, and then, the nation's infrastructure was mostly 40 years older. What's the matter with us?????????

I'[m the same way about driving over bridges, Keith, only I thought it had to do with heights and edges (I find the Golden Gate Bridge absolutely impossible but I'm fine with the Bay Bridge -- and which one has been disabled by an earthquake?). Thanks for a terrific diary, which I republished to History for Kossacks.

    •  I never liked driving on the Bay Bridge (7+ / 0-)

Isn't that the double decker bridge connecting Oakland?  We lived in the East Bay as a kid for several years, and whenever we drove over that bridge I had thoughts of the upper level pancaking onto the lower one.

I would never vocalize those fears...I was superstitious that doing so would make the fears be realized.

again. We were in Berkley for a work class for me just before the quake that DID pancake the Bay Bridge, in October. We drove the bridge two or three times while we were in town, and then two weeks after we got home to Eugene, BOOM!

OH! my husband says the HIGHWAY that collapsed at that time was a block or two from the Motel we were staying in, and we had been on IT too, several times!

Yoiks! Golden Gate for us, assuming we ever get down to the Big City again, 8-).
