    That as a new recreation center was going up, instructors were being put on furlough because of budget problems. (They said that the funds for new construction came out of a separate funding source.) Because of this, there were not enough upper-division courses being offered in my major for all of the seniors to graduate, until a few professors stepped in and added classes to the schedule essentially "for free" so that students could graduate.

    Insanity.

    This was at a mid-level state college in my state -- certainly not prestigious -- but a place that had delivered adequate college education relatively problem free previously for decades.
