    I live in Alabama and belonged to the union my entire worklife and the GOP has been quite successful in convincing even white members that they aren't needed anymore.  That must change because we need them now more than ever.

      Ultimately, the best pitch we can give for white voters is that the Democrats are the best party to protect your standard of living.  And the best argument we can make is founded on workers' rights, and the institutions that do the most to protect that:  labor unions.

      Running away from unions is pretty common in parts of the South, and it's something we shouldn't tolerate from Democratic Party politicians in the South.  Sure, sucking up to corporate interests make it easier to run for office -- that's why the Blue Dogs do well in the South.  But if we want to win in the South, being just a little less willing to screw white working people than the Republicans is never going to be a formula for success.
