    but there sure are some real "Independents". Especially in New England, where voting becomes a game against a machine, or a hegemonic party, like in Massachusetts or until recently, in Maine.

    Frankly, I agree that the idea of the "undecided voter" is a little odd. But the idea of the independent voter is very much a player.
