  •  Delaying the sequester seems to be the big issue (0+ / 0-)

remaining. Conservatives want cuts for any deal, suggesting a 30-90 day delay, Dems want a one year delay.

McConnell says pass the tax portion since there is agreement and continue working on the spending part.

how the sequester became something the Dems are trying to avoid.  Now Republicans are pushing for cuts to defense?

      •  Sequester also across the board spending cuts (1+ / 0-)

From programs that help the needy. That's why we want to avoid.

      •  Ultimately, nobody wants the sequester. (2+ / 0-)

The Repukes don't want such huge cuts to defense. The Dems don't want to crash the economy by removing spending so quickly.

      •  Because it means cuts to (1+ / 0-)

programs for the needy - head start, etc.  Not to mention cuts to other programs like NIH.

For that matter defense cuts without some increased infrastructure spending means millions of solid middle class jobs going away.

What do you think happens when defense is cut but we don't replace it with infrastructure spending?  I agree it is a good thing to cut un-needed weapons programs but we ALWAYS need to tie those cuts to increasing spending on roads, bridges, our electric grid, etc.  Otherwise we are simply cutting the largest jobs program the US has (like it or not) with no means of replacing it.

    •  Of course the agreement on tax level dependent (3+ / 0-)

on spending.  You can't pick and choose out parts during a negotiation.

The NRA is the Gun Manufacturer Lobby. Nothing more. Their pontification about the second amendment is nothing more than their ad jingle. They're the domestic version of the Military Industrial Complex.
