    intriguing books you've come across. A Higher Call and Six Years, especially.

    I'm enjoying Far From the Tree by Andrew Solomon and hope I can finish it before I need to return it to the library. This is his well-researched effort to explore cultural identity. I'm glad he wrote a chapter on why he needed to do this, from the perspective of being a gay man.  He brings up some concepts I'm not familiar with but makes total sense: vertical and horizontal identity as I'm more familiar with the nurture/nature concepts. Vertical identity is the transmission of identity deriving from peer groups reflecting the larger environment, the social/cultural context. Horizontal identity derives from genetic endowment. These concepts make sense to me and he looks at things such as prodigy, rape, transgender, autism and disability.
