after the cliff because of the military cuts in the sequester.  Obama and senate dems could have done much better. I am not so deluded as to think we get everything and they get nothing, but we could have done much better by waiting a few days. No way can I accept that this is a "good" deal.

And I don't have to accept it as a horrible one.  I would have rather had the debt ceiling dealt with, yes.  I'd have rather had the tax hike set at 250,000 and above as well.

Waiting a few days would have brought down Democratic approval numbers as unemployment benefits ended and everyone's taxes went up.  You may think that because polls a few days ago said Republicans were to blame for the stalemate that going over the cliff would do no wrong to us...  Well, I think it would have, as well as to less fortunate Americans.  Republicans have hit rock bottom.  They have next to nothing to lose in going over the cliff and still not agreeing to a deal.  The Democrats would have something to lose.  They'd have lost the votes of those on these benefits and middle class people who foam at the mouth when their taxes go up even a penny.  They calculated and angering the part of the party most progressive (quite a bit of which are here), was the easiest solution and the one that got things done for now.

I'm just a bit miffed that it's going to go all over again in 2 months, but I'll worry about that when we get to it.  Too much to do in life to worry about things like this 24/7.

major damage in 2 months. Without the expiring tax rates we have little leverage.

And I think you have over analyzed the political implications.  The prez does have a couple of speeches coming up where he could lay it out straight, and had even started laying the groundwork for that. And once again he has shown the thugs that petulant tantrums get them at least some of what they want even when they don't deserve it.
