    well-balanced take on things.

    So it prompts me to ask a question:

    For years the criticism I heard of PBO is that he "pre-compromised." The argument - as I understood it - was that he should start with a strong progressive position and then negotiate from there rather than making his opening offer something he thought the R's could support.

    On this round the president did exactly what his critics suggested - started with a strong progressive proposal and negotiated from there. Now I'm hearing from some of those same people that the original proposal was a "line in the sand" that he shouldn't have crossed.

    Perhaps I'm missing something. But the overall rational seems like a classic "no-win" for the president.
