... sustaining anything even remotely close to our current social spending with such low tax revenues ...
As if our situation has nothing to do with the massive government expansion of the Security/Military-Industrial sector or the two unfunded decade long wars.  Just that damn Social Security, Food Stamps, and Medicare/Medicaid.  Why do we have separate line items on our (at least working class) W2 withholdings for SS and Medicare, but not the war and domestic spying machines?
    •  Excellent point JohnnySacks. We have nearly (0+ / 0-)

doubled total defense spending which now total nearly $1.2 trillion.

But, most historical plot show only "base military spending" which has still seen large increases since 9/11.

But, by putting veterans benefits, veterans healthcare, intelligence, Homeland Security, and foreign aid in other places we leave out $500 billion of what should be counted in military spending.

BTW I oppose any attempt to take reductions out of veterans benefits. If we ask soldier to risk their lives and they suffer injuries in service to our country we should keep our faith and promises to them.

But, we need to ask why we still fund NATO basis and keep troops in Europe to resist a tank blitz by the Soviet Union that doesn't even exist anymore.  Most of the Warsaw Pact nations are now in the European Union, and many European countries refuse to pay more than 2% of their GDP on military expenses because they have realized the alternative was cutting their social programs.
