  •  Except that he just bargained away his leverage (1+ / 0-)

on debt limit negotiations.  In fact he bargained up the GOP's leverage by synchronizing sequestration cuts with the fiscal cliff.

The debate and bargaining will not be "should we cut entitlements" but instead "how much will we cut entitlements".  This fiscal cliff deal will be seen in hindsight as the end of Obama's second term.

    •  Nah, he's got lots of leverage (4+ / 0-)

He can suspend payment to all govt contractors. He can delay payment of govt pensions, military pay, etc. And he can delay or suspend payment of all govt workers.

Just those things would send the GOP into a total freakout.

And they don't have to last long, hell, they probably don't even have to actually happen. He just has to THREATEN to do them.

and I think  - all he WILL do - during the debt limit negotiations, is to not negotiate.  Last time he negotiated the sequester in exchange for a rise in the debt limit.  He doesn't have to do that this time.  The problem for Republicans is - considering what happened last time they brought it to the 11th hour - if they hold their hostage too long everything folds.  So I really do think that Obama is going to face them down on this, because there is no way this can go to government default.

        •  The Dave Ramsey negotiation technique: (0+ / 0-)

State you case, then shut up and just look at your counterpart. And look, and look. Eventually the human tendency to feel uncomfortable with silence kicks in and the counterpart makes a counteroffer that is somewhere between his actual desire and your position. Don't start talking yourself until your counterpart has repeated this process a few times, each time dragging himself closer to your position.

It works for major appliance purchases if your initial position represents something that will work at all for your counterpart, maybe it will work in other venues. lol.
