Traders and factors and promoters and advertisers and solicitors and realtors and managers and politicians -- all middlemen who stand between the farmer and the baker and the household needing to be sustained.
But, the problem isn't that all of these middlemen are also looking to be sustained. The problem is that the household is being deprived of sufficient dollars to pay them all off. And the reason for that is the belief that, unless people are stressed, they won't work--that, as the earliest economists taught, "man prefers leisure and must be bribed (or deprived) to work." It's a rationale that supports coercive behavior. It's a rationale propounded by people unskilled in the ways of rendering the earth productive. It's a rationale that's consoling to people who have no clue where their next meal will come from, if they can't persuade somebody to deliver it up.
Are there such people? You bet. Why do they pretend to be all-knowing? Because that, and the gift of gab, is all they've got. If, like the fox, they can't talk the crow out of lunch, they'll either starve and have to resort to theft.

The alternative to debt is theft.  For people who can't pay back what they owe, there is no other alternative.
Would the thieves of Wall Street be doing something else, if they could? You bet.
