    Obviously ocean navigation is a continuum of advances and events bringing people together -- and cultures -- and invasive species -- you bring up an interesting point in that the ease of navigation from one hemisphere to the other must've had an indirect ecological effect.

    I wonder if the microissue, of the canal dividing the isthmus in two, has ever been studied with its effect on species. The rivers of Darien were quite wild and flooded extensively prior to being (partly) controlled by the canal system.
