The GOP is in disarray unprecedented in recent decades. This disarray will affect all Obama's future negotiations with them. How? We can't say, except that Republican civil war will probably be a net positive for progressives. It's a new variable.

danced in the streets with the news that Dan Burton was retiring from the House. I said earlier if Susan Brooks didn't do anything but sit and file her nails she would be 100% better than Burton, but now that she's ready to take office I think we need to keep close watch on her and all the other incoming Freshmen Congresspersons and let them know we are watching them carefully.  Burton didn't vote at all on the Cliff, which doesn't surprise me for he checked out long ago, but be alert, just be very alert.  Brooks sounds reasonable and seems to support education, but I just don't trust her as a Republican. I dont feel she's a screaming Tea Bagger, but who knows?

Just because our enemies are on hard times, doesn't mean we can relax our vigilance a whit.

True, we've just watched governance in the House break down, humiliatingly, under John Boehner, because of radical factions' refusal to compromise. But, have hard-line takeovers of statehouses in recent years, including Michigan and Wisconsin, "failed"? Some people think the more radical legislation that's passed there, won't represent the new status quo, because it won't survive the courts. I hope they're right. Unfortunately, it's also possible--as with many historical conquests--that slowly, over generations, a new cultural mainstream will be born, which replace the existing one from the right.
