    It's the kind of situation where we're all dealing with hypotheticals, so you can see what you want to see in the numbers.

    We went from a country that a generation ago was electing Johnson with 61% of the vote, and even in 1988 Reagan got close to 59% of the vote.  

    Have we become more closely divided, that every Presidential election is going to be a razor blade?  Is Obama's smaller margin just an artifact of Hurricane Sandy, which probably would have given him a slightly larger margin?  Would the President have gotten more votes if he had run as a progressive champion instead of as a bipartisan compromiser?  I wish I knew.
