You are right about the immigration provisions and this alone is worth supporting the bill.  The US benefits by making it easier for women to flee abusive relationships... and VAWA not only helps immigrant women here, it serves as a model abroad.  I read recently that Chile is reforming its domestic gender-based violence laws and immigration policy based on VAWA.  It is one of those shrinking areas where we actually have a positive effect abroad.

But VAWA, as I understand it, also supports DOJ programs to research and track gender-based violence, and also funds trainining.  Immigrant women benefit the most... but it has components that improve the lives of US citizen women as well.

An attorney I work with who is very active in VAWA advocacy said that there actually was some nuance with respect to parts of the bill affecting Native Americans.  There is concern on the part of some that provisions of VAWA might undermine sovereignty on the part of tribal governments, but I don't know the details.  Maybe someone else here does. Joe Biden was very influential in getting VAWA passed, so maybe the GOP is also being spiteful - VAWA is one of his main legacies during his senate career.

      Now we're becoming a joke.

I find it acutely painful to see the GOP attempt to roll back so many of the protections and programs that made America great.
