Hines came up with the idea for the poses.

expressed it with great efficiency and Hines came up with funny poses.

On a nearly completely unrelated topic, my favorite-in a sarcastic-sense set of Sci-fi covers with a woman were the paperback covers for CJ Cherryh's Morgaine series.  Hardly a salacious sentence in the books and on the cover she is portrayed in the skimpiest armour ever devised.

It's about more than "funny poses" - Jim started imitating cover poses a while ago to show how poorly women are portrayed.  The pose-off with Scalzi shown above was using the poses to also raise money for a worthy cause.  Both Jim and John do good work in addition to being good authors.
