commitment by the Democratic Party.   George Bush didn't cut Social Security.  If Republicans get Democrats to do their dirty work, they only prove seniors were right all along.

You know "vote for me, I cut your Social Security and Medicare but I extended unemployment benefits" isn't exactly a winning argument with seniors and we do vote.  Democrats have become a bit smug about their new found demographics but if they think they can lose the votes of everyone over 50, they are delusional.

    •  That's not why Seniors vote Republican (0+ / 0-)

Also, the younger generation is more accepting of cuts in social programs, because of the way seniors have behaved.

People grow older not younger.  And the people who need Social Security and Medicare the very most are those who have not had the opportunity to accumulate wealth particularly African Americans and Hispanics.

        •  The 2012 election sort of disproved that (0+ / 0-)

The 2012 election very much was a generational war, and one side lost. I'm not saying I condone it, but it is very hard to hear (most, not all) seniors balk at changes to these social programs after the way they have behaved.

in social programs because they've been successfully programmed to believe that the program won't exist when it comes their turn to draw on it.

It's funny how Republicans keep approving of budgets which borrow from SS when they claim it's not solvent.

And why is their no real public discussion of how the cap is the problem?

Everything is geared to tell younger people that there won't be anything for them, anyway, so go ahead and get rid of it. We don't ever want them to get an inkling that it's actually a well-designed and solvent system.
