  •  Why wouldn't Al Jazeera keep the same lineup? (12+ / 0-)

They're not going to have a very large audience if they don't cater to Americans.

    •  they want to get a cable channel in the usa (3+ / 0-)

I read current averages 42,000 viewers in primetime, a total failure. MSNBC usually gets at least a million from 8-11.
I don't see much of an audience for Al Jazeera in this country but who knows.

    •  They are going to build an american version (8+ / 0-)

of their channel. 60% american originated content.

There's a lot of middle eastern and asian immigrants who might find their story selection useful - they cover those parts of the world much more thoroughly. And the rest of us, for that matter, who are interested in international affairs.

It is one of the only networks where you can see Israelis debating Egyptians and so forth so they do have some interesting stuff to offer.

In any case, Current is just a different type of programming, so I don't see why the would use them.

aren't even interested in what happens here. How many care about international news?

      •  My late Dad (10+ / 0-)

used to rant against Al-Jazeera, going back to 9/11. He called it a propaganda mouthpiece for Islamic terrorism, yadda, yadda.

After things went sour in Afghanistan and then Iraq, he was fascinated by clips he would see from AJ that he couldn't get anywhere else and would growl "How come American news never covers the wars anymore? They aren't going well and so the media is covering for the (Bush) Administration?" (This from a Republican of 50 years.)

Then when I was visiting one time he lapsed back into the terrorist/mouthpiece crap. I stopped him cold when I said, "Why does Qadaffi in Libya HATE Al Jazeera? Why do the idiots running Iran ban Al Jazeera's reporters from their country? Why does Syria want them all shot on sight?
If the worst dictators of the Middle East hate and despise Al Jazeera maybe their idea of reporting news rather than propaganda for the regime is a GOOD thing."

He was very thoughtful at that and decided after a while that from what he could tell, AJ was trying to be "the BBC of the Middle East." (As he had survived in occupied Europe during WWII by the lifeline of the BBC this was high praise.)

I will miss bits from Current, but if Al Jazeera can expand the NY-DC media hall of mirrors with fresh subjects and hard news reporting we will be better for it.

        Shalom.

        •  You know, I'm reviewing my Spanish (5+ / 0-)

right now to get my skills back, and watching some spanish TV over the internet. I saw an interview show on Univision that was so much more hard hitting than I was used to I was a little taken aback. And I only understood about 80% of it...

It's amazing how much media outside of this country differs from what we get here.

          •  Startling, isn't it? (5+ / 0-)

I'll offer up another thought. Above I noted the NY-DC news axis in the US (including Faux Noise, even though they are off on their own island--they can still see Staten Island from it.)

Have you noticed how the Newtown massacre has changed the national conversation about gun issues? Aurora and Columbine, CO didn't. Representative Giffords getting shot in AZ didn't. The Virginia Tech killings didn't. The Red Lake Reservation school killings in Minnesota didn't.

Newtown involved not only children, it involved Connecticut. A TON of the media (on-air and behind the microphones) lives in the greater NYC area but they are FROM CT. They have family in CT. The wealthier of them LIVE in CT or have a 2nd home in CT.

All those other tragedies happened east of the Hudson, in "flyover land" where so many East Coast types hardly ever touch down or visit.

But Newtown was personal for them, a genuine, physical threat to them and their way of life. So the coverage has been wall to wall, the questions to the gun nuts have been pointed and Wayne LaPierre of the NRA was allowed to make a ghastly clown of himself and his position.

Its only 1 factor but the East Coast media scrutiny focused on this is significant and may well result in effective legislation.

            FWIW.

            Shalom.

The difference is that its viewers are often immigrants so they want realistic news rather than the fantasy land bullshit most Americans seem to prefer.
