  •  OK ... (0+ / 0-)

I am also curious that the congressman didn't specifically rule out the Chained CPI as a cut ... I guess that is on the table?

    •  Chained CPI will manipulate the savings (7+ / 0-)

to federal pensions and military benefits... as well as SS.

So, it will give the Republicans some room to pretend they will give up a little on military budget cutting when they are simply shifting. The MIC shrugs off the sequestration threats, but our veterans out there in need will suffer from the benefit cuts that supposedly cut that Pentagon down to size.

Chained CPI simply shifts costs onto those most vulnerable.

and the Department of Defense are two different animals.  As the VA doesn't fall under the Pentagon, cuts shouldn't hurt vets.  They will hurt base schools moral, welfare, recreation, family support services, etc.

Where vets like myself get hurt, is chained CPI

        38 U.S.C. 1104 - COST-OF-LIVING ADJUSTMENTS, Sub-chapter 1, Sec. 1104 - Cost-of-living adjustments
        (a) In the computation of cost-of-living adjustments for fiscal years 1998 through 2013 in the rates of, and dollar limitations applicable to, compensation payable under this chapter, such adjustments shall be made by a uniform percentage that is no more than the percentage equal to the social security increase for that fiscal year, with all increased monthly rates and limitations (other than increased rates or limitations equal to a whole dollar amount) rounded down to the next lower whole dollar amount.
Now, there was rumor of VA and SSDI being immune from chained CPI as the President said the "most vulnerable" would be protected.  However, that is certainly divide and conquer and erodes solidarity when we need it most
        •  I read a Westpoint paper years ago (0+ / 0-)

when the Iraq War justification was crushing its opponents.

And the (officer) cadet noted that in the long run... at the end of the day of the war... the expenses required for our veterans and their injuries would result in cuts to critical military technology and acquisitions.

          No one listened.

Anyway, it would appear that somehow these things are connected if a Westpoint officer pointed it out in some white paper. Unless this split is recent.
