    The after-tax cost of donations when itemized moved up to now in a pretty narrow band of roughly 70-60%. The general taxpayer foots the bill for 30-40% of such donations even for those of very ordinary income.

    But it's impressive the number of people here who would apparently take purity of motive over quantity of contribution. I suppose we ought to simply remove the deduction for charitable giving in order to be certain that contributions were always and completely free of any taint of self-interest. Quite possibly we should also penalize anyone who receives anything in return, such as their name on a building, or on a pew at their church. Yes, there will likely be less giving as a result, but it will be so much better giving.
