    Has been an affirmative defense.  In order to invoke it successfully, you had to prove that you were in danger and that retreat was not a safe and reasonable alternative.

    Additionally, it had to be a danger not of your own making; in other words, if you initiate a confrontation you are not justified in using deadly force to defend yourself.

    Stand Your Ground has turned this on its head.  It encourages armed individuals to become aggressors and then indemnifies them against the result of their actions.

    I'm not surprised that empirical evidence shows an increase in homicides after passage of such laws.
