    It will be fun to work out the rest during the week. I already spy an angel, but can't think of an angelic carol that fits.

        5. Their identities consisted of first base, second base, third base and short stop (4; 3)
        This is one where spacing comes into play.

        The original line is "In fields where they..." The one-letter change is to drop the h from where (making it into were).

        But (as the accompanying notes to the puzzle mention) I'm also permitted to change capitalization, punctuation, and spacing.

        So I dropped the space between in and fields -- making the line read Infields were they. [Note the parenthetical numbers -- 4 for the number of words in the original line, but only 3 for the number of words in the altered line.]

        According to the dictionary, in baseball the infield is the space inside the four bases. But the players inside that area, commonly called infielders, can also be referred to as infields.
