The CTU is backing the unionization of charters through the Association of Charter Teachers (ACT) another AFL local. Under the arcane Illinois laws designed to weaken the CTU, it cannot directly organize them.

CTU activists view organizing the charters as critical and I was told that around 10% of the charters in Chicago were union. How this new ruling will affect the unionizing process is unclear.

As I understand it, the long term goal of CTU militants is organize the charters and at some point bring them into the CTU or at least form a strong alliance between the two unions.

As they say on Facebook: It's complicated.
