in their pocket is going to go on to another kind of criminal activity? Like what?

I agree that there are some scum who are in prison on drug charges because that was the easiest thing to get them off the street. We are going to regret having them out. But they are a very small minority. If we locked up everyone who gets coffee at Starbucks the same would be true.

dealing, of course.  Not the casual user.

Perhaps the author of the diary can elaborate on the violence that goes on with the marijuana drug trade alone.

You know there wasn't any war on drugs until Reagan declared one and then all of a sudden everyone had a gun.
The violence you speak of goes along with drug lords who operate outside of this country because it is illegal.   Take away the illegality and you take away the violence.  Take away the illegality and you take away a lot of their power because then everyday people are free to sell to the market instead of drug lords.
I've lived on the southern border.  And while there is violence in everything,  The media exagerates a lot of what goes on.
As for casual dealers, what violence?
I would like to point out that there is more violence under the influence of alcohol than there is even with drug lords.  It's just framed in a different way.
In my mind, a drug lord that kills someone is no different that an average joe who drinks and drives and kills someone.  That happens every day.  Do we advocate making alcohol illegal again because of all the violence associated with it?
