  •  I actually think Cantor's best path (0+ / 0-)

might be a coalition of moderate Republicans and conservative/moderate Democrats, rather than appeals to the Tea Party. He is probably smart enough, and certainly Machiavellian enough, to pull it off.

When the Speaker is elected today, anyone know if new elections can be called in mid term, or will a new Congress have to have intervened? Like, a no confidence vote... Or must the Speaker resign?

    •  But Cantor's powerbase (0+ / 0-)

are the Radicals, that's how he'll get the seat. He saw the TeaBaggers come in and jumped out ahead of them so it looked like he was leading them and he has moved Radicals into committees, et cetera, In return he wants the gavel.
It's Boner that could play that role if he had the stuffin's (and holds on to his chair). He could collect the NE Reps (what's left of 'em) and the old school Corporate Lackeys, AKA the less-bugfu(k-crazy ones, to cross the aisle and work with Pelosi's more unified and energetic caucus and at that, become probably more effective. The Wahoos are the majority of the House Republicans but not a majority of the House. 85 Republicans joined with the Ds on this last vote.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
