  •  there was an episode of dark matters (11+ / 0-)

    on leadead gasoline.

Did you know that alcohol was actually discovered first as a means of reducing knocking but it couldn't be done because of prohibition? (Well not just prohibition but that was the biggest)

The damage down over those 60 years is just incredible and perhaps incalculable

Alcohol among his reasons was so farmers could make their own fuel.Someone should make a documentary maybe named "Who killed Fords Ethanol Alcohol Car".Oh and a Engine designed to run only on Ethanol doesn't need the alcohol to be 100%/200proof pure it can be 180Proof/90% and that when it burns is gets a boost as the water converts to steam and as for making vehicles that run on 180 Proof to begin with the price of 180 Proof Ethanol would be lower than cars that need pure 200 Proof to run since a lot of energy is saved in production cause to get that last 10% of water out of Alcohol takes from what I've heard more energy than it takes to distill 40 Proof/20% Wine/Beer to 180 Proof/90% Booze point, thing is to run a car that can use both Gasoline an E85 the alcohol has to be 100% pure to mix with the Gasoline.Oh and the Compression Ratio can be higher than with Gasoline. An it's only a matter of a few years before Cellulose Based Ethanol problems get solved.

      •  actually, it's not producing 100% alcohol ... (3+ / 0-)

... that's the problem, it's storing it. It's hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water. The minutes you open a bottle, it goes SLURP and presto, 200 proof turns into 180 proof. You can keep it 200 proof only in specially sealed containers.

alcohol and water love to party together (in fact part of the symptoms of a hang over are from dehydration suffered as the alcohol you imbibe literally pulls water out of your tissue and blood)

As to an alcohol's not quite that simple because you also have to take into account energy density. Gasoline was chosen in part because it is a liquid at room temperature, it's not especially volatile (not comparatively) and because it still has a high energy density. Alcohol is at best just as volatile (though the purer it is the less I would argue this is true),  is much more likely to not stay in a liquid form (due to vapor pressure) and is on the whole much more reactive.

But perhaps the biggest knock against alochol is energy density, it only has about 66.70% the energy density of gasoline. This means that 1 gallon of gasoline provides as much energy as 1.5 gallons of ethanol (alochol as you are using the term)

So I don't expect enthanol engines anytime soon

....alcohol was also considered as an anti-knock additive to gasoline, but rejected partly because tetraethyl lead would make a lot more money for the producers.

      •  I am not sure if you are aware of water (1+ / 0-)

injection being used to improve engine performance/efficiency but that sounds like exactly the same thing.

You have watched Faux News, now lose 2d10 SAN.
