  •  I remember my mechanic at the time was not at all (12+ / 0-)

    pleased with the unleaded stuff -- but his reasons were based solely on being a mechanic.

    "It'll screw your valves" he said -- noting that the lead was one thing that helped keep parts like valve stems lubricated.

    His solution was pretty simple though: just add one shot (as in shot glass) of Type-F transmission fluid to the tank every two or three fill-ups (this to my 1971 Ford).

    It seemed to work, and ol' Nelly kept on chugging along for many unleaded years afterwards.

      It's true that the valve seats wear out faster, but it doesn't happen nearly as quickly as people feared.  By the time you need to replace the seats, it's likely that you would have needed an engine rebuild for a host of other reasons anyway.
