    In my experience, the vast majority of violent criminals (basically 100% on death row) experienced some traumatic family experience at a very early age.

    They are almost all the products of a physically, emotionally, and sexually abusive household. Most have lost multiple family members and been exposed to violence from a very early age. This typically combines with a lack of hope because of poverty in a society with so much wealth. This sort of disenfranchisement is compounded by the fact that most of these people have no support system - the "threads" that hold the people to society are severed early on. While you and I might be hanging on by five threads (our parents, wives, kids, church, career, etc.), these people sometimes hang on by one thread.
