One of my grad school advisors is a child of Holocaust survivors. If I recall correctly, she was the last child to be born in the DP camps for survivors after the war.
In one of our grad seminars on literature of the Holocaust (a complicated subject of its own, to be sure), she shared with us that in the camps one of the favorite pastimes was writing and performing skits that relentlessly and thoroughly ridiculed Hitler, in vivid and scatological detail. And why not, after all? Despite the evil and horror he had unleashed in the world, he was dead, and they were alive. Still, the camp residents didn't share them with outsiders, figuring other people really wouldn't understand. That may well be true even today.
Thanks, Ellid, for another interesting and well-written diary. I am also interested in seeing those photos. Lucky man, your father. Sounds like you were lucky too.

Some DKos series & groups worth your while: Black Kos, Native American Netroots, KosAbility, Monday Night Cancer Club. If you'd like to join the Motor City Kossacks, send me a Kosmail.
