  •  I know Britten is hailed as the great writer (6+ / 0-)

    for voices in the 20th century, but I think that in terms of directness of writing, and in the gratefulness of writing (that is, how naturally it lies in the voice), nobody compares to RVW, with the possible exceptions of Purcell and Mozart.

    Take his Serenade to Music—he splits the music up into as many as twelve different parts, but all of them still sound "melodic." And everybody gets their turn to shine!
