  •  If you look at the record.... (5+ / 0-)

Democrats have won because Republicans screwed up....not because the Dems have a winning strategy or anything....

    •  In some races, yes (4+ / 0-)

but not in every race. 2012 saw Dems running better candidates across the board. Where we didn't, e.g. Bob Kerrey, we got appropriately slammed.

    •  Well, it is a winning strategy to be able (10+ / 0-)

to take advantage of Republican screw-ups.  Like a football team that can score after a turnover.  The points are on the board no matter how they got there and winning is winning either by luck or skill or a combination of both.

      •  Well... (7+ / 0-)

relying on your opponent to screw up, rather than run a decent offense is a crappy way to indulge in strategic thinking.

for example, it would be truly great to think of what would happen if we actually had a commitment  to a LONG TERM  50 state strategy where the DNC had field staff in red states so that people there wouldn't have to rely on Republicans to define us, and that people could met and talk to down ballot candidates, such as candidates for water boards, school boards, city council seats and the like.

The Republicans got to where they are now, such as it is from decades of actually working on party building, while our own party, thanks to people like Al Frum and the DLC abandoned the states with people who can benefit from our policies and weren't conned into voting against their own interests.

We need a concerted effort across this nation to counter Republicans on the local and state level:  elect Attorneys General, and Secretaries of that we don't have to every goddamn thing ad hoc, and not have to rely on the Republicans to be idiots.

Once there was a guy heading the DNC who had a vision to rebuild the party from the bottom up, county by county and state by state, but he got the bum's rush from the current administration, which still thinks you party build by courting big donors....and ignoring the fact that is a crappy way to achieve sustainable political power.

But if you think that we can achieve long term political power by relying on Republicans to screw up.....and not engage in actually promoting the party on the basis of what we believe, well.....I guess there are advantages to having divided government....
