Addresses were simpler back in the day, esp. when it was a small town where the postmaster knew everyone. Despite that, mail often traveled surprisingly fast, thanks to frequent ancestors used to keep up a mail correspondence with no more than a 2-day delay between Lowell MA and a small Western Maine town that didn't even have paved roads and where mail was delivered by horseback, carriage, or sleigh.
