  •  Gee, I think you're misreading what happened (37+ / 0-)
The GOP agreed to the deal in the last few days because it believed it would retain the bargaining power, or the leverage going into the next round of negotiation.
Boehner allowed an up or down vote on the fiscal cliff because he and his fellow Republicans can read public opinion polls as well as anyone. They knew Republicans would be blamed if we went over the cliff. The stuff about keeping their powder dry for later negotiations is just a fig leaf to cover up the reality that they lost. Remember when Democrats used to keep their powder dry? We used the very same excuse.
    •  Polling plays on a role in it (7+ / 0-)

They were also very aware that (1) they had accomplished a long term strategic goal with the Bush tax cuts argument (2) had an argument for limiting revenue (Why Norquist Agreed to this is not because he cares about public opinion or felt his back was against the wall but because he saw the limitations on revenue that winning the first argument produced, and that this limitation on revenue means shrinking governmnet) and (3) they realized they would have further chances having won the key long term concession that was their goal.

When you stop looking at people as you want them to be, and see them as who they are, they make a lot more sense. Meaning, the GOP has interests, and therefore goals. You may not like them, but they are there, and if you understand what they are predictable as far as what they will do.

The GOP here held out for a tax policy enshrines the notions that were pushed by Bush and Reagan before him.

They also ensure that they will  live to fight another day, which is all they needed to do here.

I can see the site has already moved on, as it did with ACA, and a number of other policies to pretending that a progressive lose is a victory. That just because a conservative measure was passed this mean we won because a Democrat did it. BUt in actuality the measurement of winning is not whether your team can claim victory anymore than it is if the GOP dos if the policy outcome is the same. It becomes meaningiless rhectoric.

The key issue is "what's in the bill' What long term strategic goals are advanced by them?

That's not keeping your "powder dry" That's understanding that  you already won part of the battle, and understanding that its a long term war.

      •  Like I've tried to explain elsewhere; the first (0+ / 0-)

round of the Fiscal Cliff Shock Doctrine pushed our government further into the clutches of conservatism.

Now I'd call that a loss for progressivism.

Physics is bulls**t. Don't let them fool you. Fire IS magic.

    •  They miscalculated the results of the election... (11+ / 0-)

too. In other words: "Drat! Foiled again!

The GOP agreed to the deal in the last few days because it believed it would retain the bargaining power, or the leverage going into the next round of negotiation.
Although it was pure arrogance on their part, they actually believed the Senate and the White House would be theirs.

(and I'm willing to bet they're so preoccupied with getting their greedy little hands on "entitlements" now; they so far haven't even realized that they've been rolled by Obama)
