  •  The punishments on the books are rarely handed (8+ / 0-)

out to first time offenders. Especially if you're white and/or rich. That an entire industry of DUI/DWI attorneys exists tells you the problem isn't going to be fixed easily.

What's wrong with America? I'll tell you. Everything Romney said was pre-chewed wads of cud from Republicans from the last 30 years and yet he managed thru a combination of racism and selling the (false) hope of riches to get 47% of the national vote.

      more than one level . . .

In any event, in this case losing one's driver license for a year seems to be quite harsh indeed - which for somebody in his position (i.e., who can afford to have someone drive him around) isn't that big of a deal.

But for an ordinary person, that would have been huge.   But it's not really the court's fault that he's not an ordinary person, I suppose.

We can't function without our cars in far too many places. Even in an urban setting like Seattle many folks still need a car. It's the results of a 100 years of urban planning to accommodate cars. We're going to have to change that.

Will he actually pay to have someone drive him around, or will his drivers be paid by the taxpayers?

... due to a first-time DUI bust.  She was able to get a permit that allowed her to drive to/from work only.  IIRC she had small time windows for her morning and afternoon commutes.

She was single and living by herself, in southern California, so I'm sure that being able to drive nowhere except to/from work was pretty harsh.  Unlike Senator Crap-o who can and will just call a limo or taxi or hire a personal driver to take him on his "business" in the DC area.

      •  Work permits (0+ / 0-)

You can almost always get a "work driver's permit" to drive TO and FROM work only.   Very standard.  Always abused.

Minority rights should never be subject to majority vote.
