    and obama himself wanted to keep troops in iraq past the withdrawal date. but as i also pointed out to you, fluornoy last summer warned israel not to attack iran.

    •  Hagel's actually to the left of (11+ / 0-)

      Obama (and Sestak) on Iran in that he's on record opposing sanctions (sanctions that are hurting Iranian civilians.) In fact, he's to the left of virtually the entire political establishment on this. That means something to me, and it should mean something to people who fear war with Iran.

      Sadly, he'll probably "revisit" that position in time for the confirmation hearings, but in any case, that, along with his loud and relatively early call for withdrawal from Iraq, signals an independent and bold streak that most people in that position would lack. I'm not trying to make him out to be a peace-loving champion -- clearly he's not -- just arguing that he's a relatively not-bad choice given the alternatives.

      experience on Capitol Hill that is needed to make the job work. You  need somebody who knows both the Pentagon and Capitol Hill. Levin would optimal, but a Republican Governor would be replacing him.

      I'm no supporter of Hagel, for sure. But somebody needs to keep Generals in line and Panetta isn't the man for that job.
