    talking on your cell phone, driving without a seat belt, tail gating, speeding, texting while driving, etc. was cany's point, I believe.

    CHP and area Sheriff's are well-known for being far, far more interventionist than in many states. I've had licenses in a half dozen states and have driven through most of them: California has distinctly strong driving laws. Plus, it's not hard to lose your license. It's like half as many points as NY, IIRC.

    And high fines, might I add. A cell phone ticket's about $300 right now.

    On any given daily commute, which is about 25-30 minutes, I can predictably see 3-4 cop cars en route, often with someone pulled over.

      I watch other cars carefully. Often indecisive and tentative, pulling halfway into intersection oblivious to oncoming traffic but going slow. Not as bad as drunks, usually.

        but that's probably what it would look like around here too with all the vineyards and micro breweries, thus the tight control, I think -- although CHP's had a reputation since, well, C.H.I.P.S!
