    Although the "oldest" line is debatable from a number of different aspects (wasn't always independent, it was banned for a few decades, there's a couple other contenders with different claims on the record, the early Alþing was often more like a court, etc).

      foucaultspendulum asked if democracy itself were doomed to fail, mentioned a couple of republics (Rome and Greece, not really all that similar, but both had some version of representative government) that failed and turned into more authoritarian forms of government. FP asked if we were walking the same path, if democracy were inherently unviable. I suggested we ask Iceland, as arguably the world's oldest democracy. Then I suggested we ask you, since you know Iceland. :-)
