    I don't think the problem is that mental health resources are unavailable (even if politicians are stingy with the budgets).

    What I do know of the quirks of people like Lanza and that last one is that these people actively avoid interaction with mental health workers.

    Let's not forget that Lanza shot his mother (at least in part) because of her attempts to force such involvement. She wanted him committed, and he found out.

    It's something peculiar about that sort of mental illness that it causes them to avoid the very things that might help.

    The problem therefor isn't our policy (or lack of) at all, but a problem of research: how do you identify such individuals, and how do you approach them in a way that they are receptive? If anyone knows the answer to that question, I have not heard of it.
