  •  as a poor white suburban child, (8+ / 0-)

some of my 'best friends' were black.

I found the minor cultural difference intriguing.

as a smart popular small-town adolescent,

some of my black acquaintances from the jock clique,

I usually found funny, giving, and all-round good guys.

as a struggling blue-collar worker, living in the very low-rent urban district,

I found my street encounters with roving gangs of both blacks and hispanics,

mostly frightening challenges of testosterone and mis-communications.  Of course, being robbed at gun-point, did little to lessen my biased-fears.

as a aging government worker, working in a very progressive city,

I find my working encounters with many, many races different than me, no big deal.

I find the wide-ranging cultural differences, from so many difference races,
very interesting and intriguing, once again.  Black folks too.

Today it's the roving gangs of homeless, who make me "cross the street" before I meet them.

The crime stats that some in this local demographic, has racked up,
is a note-worthy cause of concern.  Which often makes the local news.

Desperation, can lead to desperate action. As many have found out the hard way, in this very progressive city, where I now dare to work, and traverse the streets.

People are people.  I hope that someday "we all learn to get along."  And learn to respect and understand our differences, and even more our common humanity.

Here's how the game is really Rigged.
