    Countdown to No True Scotsman...

The plural of anecdote is not data.

    •  The implication being that all Christians are (0+ / 0-)

patriarchal misogynists? Or that all Catholics are?

I would say that a good number of (Western) Catholics are aware that their church hierarchy is reactionary. Some don't leave the church because being Catholic is an identity thing for them.

I expected to hear assertions that this priest was not a "real Christian". This is an extremely common thing to hear after someone brings to light an unpleasant story about a member of the clergy or someone who strongly identifies with their religion.

Nobody appears to have done that in this diary (at least not in a public post), which is a very pleasant surprise.

I understand that it is difficult to leave the church. I would like to think I'd manage to do it, but I'm not in the position to know for sure. Many people DO manage to do it, though. Some are posting in this diary.

        •  A difficult part of being a Christian... (0+ / 0-)

even if, like myself, you only feel like you belong to the tradition, as opposed to actually being a believer, is learning to accept that some Christians are very primitive. (For years, I tried to convince myself that fundamentalists are not really Christians.) The challenge of ecumenism is an unavoidable aspect of Christianity.

As for whether I would leave the RC church if I were raised a Catholic, sometimes I think I would, sometimes I think I wouldn't. (Not that I personally find the RC Church at all appealing. I respect its tradition however, because it was very formative of Western culture.)
