English literature .  Did my undergrad at Berkeley, and grad work at Mills College.  What we have here in California for liberal arts majors is a course required called Bible as Literature.

I actually ended up teaching that course in a community college a number of years later and wished that all undergrads would have been required to take it.  It was fun to require people who had been taught to interpret the Bible literally to examine it as story telling.

a lot of Western culture.  Catholics are not fundamentalist so I also understood the the parable aspect of it.  And of course, Catholics do not spend much time reading or memorizing the Bible, especially the Old Testament.  We know a few stories and the chronological history but most Catholics cannot name a chapter or verse.  We know the Gospel stories  and the epistles from Mass.  It's more important for us to understand what Christ taught than to cite a passage.
