      serious chess for quite a while, certainly decades.

      It is rare for a woman to get to the very top in chess (that is, to compete with the best men in the world on an equal basis). But there's lots and lots of women who play chess very well indeed.

      OTOH, there are also still lots of people who "know" that they don't have the ability, or shouldn't play, or that it was unfeminine, or that it would make women masculine etc. etc. ad nauseum.
