  •  guns offer an easy shortcut to power over others (5+ / 0-)

All someone needs to do is point a gun and the fear produces power, an ancient equation.

There are so many roots to the current problems we are having, that one can get dizzy going around and around looking at points of alarm that should be raised.

The roots are in our schools and libraries, which we are undermining through budget cuts every year.  The roots are in a consumer culture that feeds on profits that come from exploiting the worst in people, especially in terms of entertainment.  We are literally eating our young.

The roots are in a mental health establishment that has broken down and does nothing to ameliorate the suffering of approximately half a million people, some small percentage of whom are likely to produce a lot of gun violence.

The roots are in a fantasy about individuality that comes from ingesting notions of the Old West fostered by Louis L'Amour and other myth makers, and a reaction againt the fact that we live in a complex culture with 315 million people, in a world of 7 billion.

There is certainly work to do.  One has to do some serious study about what people have already tried to do and some thinking about what might be a possible point of consensus.

This is not going to be easy.

hope that the idiots who have no constructive and creative solutions but only look to tear down will not win the day.

violence among the peons. Male serfs who correctly sense that they have been shafted in life, but lack the intelligence and education to identify their true feudal lord oppressors, can feel falsely powerful by buying guns. And when they flip out, they will kill other serfs -- never the feudal oppressors.

The system works the way it is intended to work.
