    .....that you can really become engaged with the singers as their characters close up, rather than having the relatively detached overall perspective of sitting in the house, viewing the whole stage.  That view is best in the big pageant scenes, of course, showing the bringing of the horse into the city, etc..  The disadvantage for the singers is that they're "on" all the time, since they have no idea whether or not the camera is on them, although it's a reasonable guess that if s/he isn't singing a particular line and isn't directly in the dramatic moment, the camera will focus elsewhere.
