    I figured out Vanyel was gay just about the same page he did, and little Southern Baptist me was too far in the bought-not-borrowed book to put it down (besides the fact I was already emotionally attached to the characters).

    By the time I finished the book, I was really questioning what little of the anti-gay rhetoric I had absorbed in church.

    And by the time summer rolled around and one of my friends came out, I was a fledgling ally who didn't need 101 instruction to actually be supportive.

    I don't think I would have started that 'what do these verses actually mean and how does that figure into everything else, anyway?' trawl through the university library if it wasn't for that book. At least not until after it would have meant a little less support for someone who needed every shoulder to lean on he could find.
