  •  I would much rather see it done as two questions: (5+ / 0-)

    1) Should same-sex couples be allowed to enter into civil unions, yes or no?

    2) Should same-sex couples be allowed to enter into marriage, yes or no?

We would get much more useful numbers like that.  Combining them allows some people who are uncomfortable with the idea of marriage but might still be persuadable to instead pick "civil unions" as an option.  But in reality, civil union states almost always shift to full marriage within a few years, there's almost no point to polling the question anymore.  Full marriage equality is coming, and I'd like to know what kind of opposition we're getting to that alone.

I think the marriage question should be asked first otherwise people might be tempted to think 'they've done enough' by supporting civil unions when if marriage equality was the only option they'd support it.  So ask marriage equality first and then report the cross tabs of how people answered both questions so we don't have to worry about marriage equality people saying no to civil unions, but similarly when push comes to shove they could be convinced to support them.
